SLP010 - Dirty Hope - Euan Me LP (SOLD OUT)
|
The album 'Euan Me' is a collection of tracks that were written for a small chap called Euan Francis, Dave's one-year-old nephew. In contrast to the clanky rhythmic stylings of his other work, the Dirty Hope sound is rooted in ambient and modern classical sounds, referencing the likes of Steve Reich, Delarosa and Asora, and Loscil. The intention was to make an album of music for little Euan to sleep to, and thus it has a weightless style rooted in gentle, gradual movement and pulsing sound washes. Whilst made mostly on a battered old laptop, 'Euan Me' also features more focused use of live instrumentation than Donnelly's earlier work, in the form of keyboard, treated guitar and craftily hidden vocal elements. All tracks were recorded live in Audiomulch instead of sequenced, lending the proceedings a rough-around-the-edges feel. Its focal point is the 10 minutes-plus 'To Care, Divine', a modal drift through minimalist mallet instruments, block-y Thelonious Monk piano chords and plaintive, faraway sung melodies. Listen: to care
